TUMAINI BROOKS SCHOOL

Tumaini Brooks School was founded by Alice and David Hinga about 25 years ago. It is located in Kiambu, Kenya, just outside Nairobi. There are about 600 students, ranging from Kindergarten right up to 18. About 500 of these children board at the school, many are orphans or come from very challenging backgrounds where their families are unable or unwilling to care for them. Many have been the victims of abuse and all benefit from the caring and nurturing environment which exists at the school.

The school operates on the standard Kenyan education curriculum and students sit standard exams. However, in many other cases children cease full-time education as they reach teenage years as parents require them to work. We enable our children to have full-time education right through to 18 and our goal is that they all leave with a clear vocational pathway. (see Tumaini Vocational Center)

In the last couple of years, there have been some tragic fires at schools in Kenya. This has resulted in the Ministry of Education requiring several improvements in standards at schools like ours. As seen in the video here, as at January 2025, 384 schools remained closed due to them not being able to achieve these upgrades. We are indebted to our many supporters who helped us raise a massive amount of money in our Big Ask 2024 campaign which has enabled us to complete all the work necessary to retain our registration. If we had not been able to do this, all 600 children may have found themselves back in very challenging circumstances.

We are committed to supporting Tumaini Brooks school in their goals to provide clothing, protection, shelter, food and first class education to these vulnerable children, giving them the best opportunity possible to break out of the poverty cycle in which so many in Africa are trapped.

You probably can't change the world, but you can change someone's world
